In partnership with NEWH, a leading networking organization for hospitality industry professionals, we are currently accepting artwork submissions for our annual hospitality design contest. We enjoy this opportunity each year to exhibit the talent of up-and-coming designers in the hospitality field and to support the education of future designers within the industry.
“Dscvr18 is a way for us to make a greater impact on the industry and a way for us to mentor the designers who are coming up behind us,” said Elizabeth Bonner, creative design director for Durkan.
“Designing carpet might be an avenue many students haven’t considered, and it’s always fun to see what the next generation of designers is looking at and responding to—and how that might translate to flooring design.”
We’re inviting all design students who are currently enrolled in a college or university to participate in this rare opportunity in the hospitality flooring sector. We also encourage college faculty to incorporate the competition into their interior design curricula. Participation gives students real-world experience with the unique chance to think all the way through a flooring project, and the partnership with NEWH provides networking opportunities and potential funds for students’ education.
“The dscvr competition has really opened my eyes to the carpet field, and with Durkan and newer technologies like Definity, it’s made me pay more attention to flooring and designers in the carpet industry,” said 2017 grand prize winner Megan Cook Turner. “It has been a huge resume builder and has helped round out my portfolio. Designing specifically for carpet is a completely different challenge, and I’m really enjoying it.”
Turner, who has since graduated from Utah State University with an interior design degree, is currently working with Durkan on a new carpet collection for hospitality.
dscvr18 Submissions and Awards
So how do you enter? Student designers should submit concepts for flooring in standard ballroom and pre-function settings, viewing the floor spaces as blank canvases where individual designs culminate in one large design. Entries will be judged based on concept, presentation and market feasibility, and submissions will be reviewed by a panel of Durkan associates who work in various departments across the company.
Students do not need to have reached a certain level of education or have any specific experience to participate, and designs don’t have to be complex to be considered viable entries. “We receive entries from students at all levels of graphic design,” explains Bonner. “We’re looking for designers who can utilize their tools in the best way possible at whatever level they find themselves.”
Winning does have its privileges! Designers of the top two submissions will each receive a trip to Las Vegas for the Hospitality Design Expo, where on May 2, 2018 one grand prize winner will be announced and awarded a $2,500 NEWH scholarship from Durkan. A second-place winner will also be recognized with a $1,000 award. Designs from the top five finalists will be on display in the Durkan booth at the trade show, and all winning designs will be cataloged and promoted by Durkan.
We will be accepting submissions for dscvr18 now through Friday, March 23, 2018. Entrants can begin their submission by registering through an online form at Durkan.com/dscvr.
