2018-2019 Color and Design Vision: POINT | COUNTERPOINT
The Color and Design Vision is where we at Mohawk Group share our vision for the coming months, forecasting what we believe are the leading concepts that fuel our current product development and inspire our customers with relevant, meaningful color and design insight.
Recently we launched the new Color + Design Vision CEU series for 2018-2019, called POINT | COUNTERPOINT
Every thought, mood, and shift has a dichotomy: a duality, a flip-side, a split. For 2018-2019,
we look at major ideas in culture today and see multiple views that drive a new language of design.
Today we are living in between two extremes. The world has become so polarized that both sides often can be perceived as simultaneously true. We also live in a time of great disparity and conflict, where different groups of people hold on to belief systems that have opposing views. One thing is clear, however, and that is when looking at culture today, we have multiple visions of the future. For many of us, we live in between the polarities, caught between these two opposing visions. And many of us call for unity and a desire to live as one, hoping for common ground and stability to build a more secure future.
We call this POINT | COUNTERPOINT, where we will explore contrary views of the world today, as well as our need for stability, and how this is affecting art and design.
This year, our categories that speak to these cultural shifts are:
THEN | NOW
ORDER | CHAOS
ACTION | REACTION
This CEU aims to explore design in the wake of current and future cultural trends. Design is heavily impacted by culture as well as politics, socio-economic factors, and human response. This is framed within the context of today’s polarized global view. By looking at these themes, we will also share the 2018-2019 forecast of design trends and color palette for commercial interiors.
With the chaos and stress of today’s polarized world, we will examine the major shifts that are affecting design: identity, sense of place, storytelling, consumerism, materiality, manipulation of media, security, transparency, and trust. The CEU covers these topics, in addition to discussions about history, technology, and the global political climate.
In a polarized world, we are often tasked to take sides. But now more than ever, mankind is deciding what kind of future we want to craft and shape through our voices and behaviors. Design and Art is taking center stage to this movement and confronting all with questions about how to be a good citizen and regain our humanity in a world that’s gone digital as well as turbulent. Designers will be inspired to confront their own belief systems and see how they can use design for the betterment of the industry and mankind.
These factors are shaping a new design language that is not as consistent as what we have seen in the past, and a look at these topics will shed light on why these issues are relevant in design today. Traditional methods of creating design and art are changing and being shaped by popular culture. We will look at several examples where this is happening, and show how this is shaping up as a major shift in design approach and production.
Technology is creating new types of artificial intelligence and interactions with mankind. This is dramatically changing human behaviors and designers are at the center of this discussion. Can we make machines more human? Will humans be affected by robots?
POINT | COUNTERPOINT is all about finding common ground where we can all peacefully coexist, and the same can be said for the varied materials of architecture and interior design. See how our color + design vision inspired our color forecast for 2019, bringing harmony and balance to a space by using warm and cool tones together.
