D*SCOVERing A New Generation Of Design Talent

Posted by in Designer Curated, Discover | 0 comments

Our Durkan D*SCOVER student design competition, in partnership with NEWH, celebrates the talent of designers in the hospitality design field and contributes toward the education of future designers. The contest is held annually and winners are announced at HD Expo as part of a live presentation during the show.

Know of a talented student designer that should enter? We invite you to reach out to student groups, educators, colleges and universities and help us get the word out before our April 7 deadline! With bragging rights and a grand prize of $2,500 on the line, we look forward to another year of inspiring and eye-catching entries!

Recently, we caught up with Jillissa Moorman, Interior Design Coordinator, Assistant Professor and Professional Development Fellow at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Here’s what Jillissa had to say about D*SCOVER:

My students have been participating in this competition since its inception. In fact, the competition is integrated into my coursework. Many competitions focus on whole spaces, and while that is fine, I encourage my students to go a little deeper and look at conceptual development and creative design even more specifically through carpet designs and textiles. Even if my students don’t win or place, I think it is an inspiring competition presented to all design students. The competition builds a connection for when they are designers in the workplace. I’m so thankful that we have this in our industry and that companies such as Durkan recognize the future of design—our students.

Last year’s grand prize winner, Hailey Fonda of Utah State University, shares what sparked the creativity behind her first place designs:

Lumin reminds us of light. This collection is meant to inspire light and movement through the organic shapes and color. Inspired by the unique beauty of jellyfish, this collection emanates their inspiring visuals and movement. The organic lines carry you throughout the space while creating a continuous motion and connection.

We continue to be blown away by the talent we find through the student competition. Click here to learn how the D*SCOVER contest identified and recruited one of the newest members of the Durkan design team.
